The Simple Green U.S. Open of Handball Presents the 24th Annual Naty Alvarado Handball Classic!

Tournament expands to become the premier handball competition in the U.S.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA, USA, September 11, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- --Sunshine Makers Inc., the makers of Simple Green, are proud to present the biggest and most ambitious edition of the Simple Green US Open of Handball to date. The 24th Annual Naty Alvarado Handball Classic will be held from October 23-26, 2014 at Los Caballeros Sports Village located at 17272 Newhope Street in Fountain Valley, CA 92708.

Presenting sponsor Simple Green is joined by event director Naty Alvarado Sr., the world’s greatest handball player. “Last year’s tournament set a very high standard for one of the fastest growing sports in the world today,” stated Alvarado. “The total purse size has increased by 67% and many of the athletes have stepped-up their game in preparation for this tournament. We expect the level of competition to be at an all-time high.”

This year's tournament has the largest prize purse of any handball tournament in the world with $200,000 to be awarded across several divisions. The Simple Green US Open attracts handball players from all over, both domestically and internationally, with entrants in previous years traveling from Ireland, Australia, Canada, and Mexico.

Of particular interest is the participation this year of Timbo Gonzalez, one of the most exciting players in the game. At 22 years old he is already a master of 1 Wall handball and brings an unbridled talent, discipline, and passion to the sport that draws comparisons to the tennis games of John McEnroe and Raphael Nadal. Gonzalez will be leading the charge of a swarm of New York men's and women's 1 Wall players which will drive the competition to bring their very best. The depth of the field and the size of the prize money at stake make this year's tournament one of the most prestigious and exciting in the world.

In addition, the Simple Green US Open 2014 is distinguished by the breadth of competitive divisions including men's and women's singles, doubles, small ball, big ball, 1 Wall, 3 Wall, and 4 Wall, as well as age divisions ranging from Juniors to “Veteran Diamond” Players 75+. With space enough to accommodate up to 1200 people to watch these world-class athletes, Los Caballeros Sports Club is the perfect venue for the biggest handball event of the year!

The tournament's enormous scope is the fulfillment of a dream by Naty Alvarado and Simple Green founder Bruce FaBrizio to create a "Festival of Handball" where all best players of different versions of the sport are in one place at one time. FaBrizio’s patronage and love of the sport stems from when a football coach incorporated handball into his training regimen because of the intense footwork involved. “In the nearly 40 years of Simple Green,” says FaBrizio, “I have always made it a priority for us to give back to communities that support positive change. It is my joy to sponsor this tournament.”

Handball is one of the oldest sports in the world, with evidence of variants existing as far back as ancient Egypt. Its popularity and persistence are often attributed to its simplicity, requiring only “a ball and a wall.” Practitioners of the sport are hopeful to soon get handball included in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The Simple Green U.S. Open of Handball will be broadcast LIVE on ESPN3 for the final two days of the tournament as well as webcast live via the World Professionals of Handball League website throughout the event at www.race4eight.com.
