Alkol Biotech joined Madrid Science Park: Spain's leading bioenergy research center This will speed up its research on a sugarcane hybrid for Europe's 2G goals.

Madrid, August 1, 2014. Alkol Biotech, as part of its expansion process, joined Madrid’s Science Park. The company develops new plant varieties adapted to the needs of specific biofuel markets. This allows the development of healthy biofuel markets in countries which would otherwise have to import biomass in order to produce biofuels sustainably.

Madrid’s Science Park (Parque Científico de Madrid - PCM) was formed in 2001 by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) to encourage R&D and knowledge transfer. The Park hosts several leading biotechnology companies in a network designed to foster enterpreneurship and state of the art R&D.

Alkol also has the support of the School of Forestry of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Now, being located in the Science Park of that city will grant it access to venture capital funds, technology partners, and other resources required for its main project. This is the development of a sugarcane hybrid intended to produce high cellulose content biomass for the European "generational blackout" of 1st generation biofuels in 2020, where 93% of the ethanol used in the old continent will come from cellulose and no longer sugar as currently happens.
