FDF meet future food engineer hopefuls at special event
Parents, teachers, students and industry engineers converged upon the exciting O2 arena, to give MEng Food Engineering applicants a taste of engineering in food and drink manufacturing.
The event, held on Saturday 5 April, gave applicants and their parents the chance to find out more about the degree and the career prospects offered. It was also an opportunity for applicants to meet a number of industry mentors that have signed up to support students on the course.
The day, led by Graduate Excellence Project Lead and Technical Director at Nestlé UK, Richard Martin, highlighted the career opportunities available to engineers in our sector and shared how engineering is used to create some of the UK's most popular products, for example Mint Aero and After Eight mints.
The programme for the day also included a challenge for applicants to work out how to create a picking device using a Festo finn-gripper and using their engineering skills to build a tower using a limited number of items.
At the end of the session applicants and their guests were given a ride on the Emirates Air Line and a Thames Clipper river cruise returning them into the centre of the city.

This event forms part of the Graduate Excellence partnership's programme of activities to support students and keep them engaged with the course. The Food and Drink Federation is looking for more industry mentors to get involved in the project.
