Europe and its battle against cyber crime

BENELUX, EUROPE, , January 24, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- 2013 was the year for new cyber security laws and regulations across Europe. Cyber criminals have hacked NATO, government agencies and corporations for some years and Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) recently announced the hacking of 16 million German email accounts, a massive security breach very similar to one that happened in South Korea in July 2013.

In February 2013 in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Portugal, and Romania, online criminals attacked EU government computers with malware called "MiniDuke", which also affected individuals across Europe.

The impact of these attacks is often wider than first analysis: hackers are also likely to get access to users’ other e-commerce accounts if those users re-use the same passwords.

The European Union is raising concern over cyber attacks. In February 2013 the European Commission published a cyber security strategy called “The Strategy”. The Strategy sets common minimum requirements for network and information security among the member states and aims to raise concern over cyber-attacks and to increase demand for the adoption of security standards in order to protect organisations and individuals more effectively. Single European national strategies have been listed on the ENISA website and can be consulted free of charge.

IT Governance EU, the global leader in information security and ISO27001 compliance expertise, recommends that all government agencies and companies of any size and sector should know and implement protections are available against hackers. IT Governance EU also recommends downloading the “ISO27001 & Information Security” green paper free of charge from their website for more information about the information security standard and its implementation.
