President Obama Greeted by Protesters

Protesters greet President Obama at vacation home in Kailua, Hawaii, to stop Fast Track of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

KAILUA, HAWAII, USA, December 28, 2013 /EINPresswire.com/ -- President Obama was greeted by over two dozen protesters as he left his vacation home in Kailua, Hawaii for dinner Friday, December 27, 2013.

The protesters were demonstrating against the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). This pending international treaty could regulate 40% of the world’s international trade.

Opponents of the pending treaty have raised concerns that the US allowed over 600 multinational corporations to negotiate the actual text of the agreement, in secret. Most members of Congress today have no access to the treaty, while the “corporate advisors” reportedly have full on-line access to manage the negotiations. The administration has expressed a desire to fast track the new trade agreement through Congress, with only an up or down vote, without amendment.

Some of the companies providing advice for the new international environmental rules include: Exxon-Mobil, Chevron, Halliburton, Monsanto and Dow Chemical. There have been leaks with sections of the treaty raising significant concerns among small and medium sized business owners, farmers, labor unions, physicians, and environmental advocates.

As an example, the leaked chapter on Intellectual Property reveals large pharmaceutical companies have successfully included extensions to patents on brand name drugs to prohibit the introduction of lower costs generics. As Doctors Without Borders explains, when the US allows Big Pharmaceutical Companies to negotiate the rules for international drugs, Big Pharma wins at the expense of healthcare.

Protests are growing worldwide.
