Working in Partnership is Key to Continuing Environmental Improvement
A new report today published by the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) demonstrates that food and drink manufacturers continue to deliver real progress in reducing their environmental impacts and are well on track to meet industry targets through FDF's Five-fold Environmental Ambition.
First launched in 2007, FDF's Five-fold Environmental Ambition sets a range of class leading targets in carbon reduction, water saving, food waste, packaging and transport. This year's progress report highlights how carbon dioxide emissions have been cut by 32% since 1990, which means we are close to reaching our 2020 target of a 35% reduction. Similarly water use has been reduced by 16% since 2007, meaning that we are well on course to meet our target of 20% reduction by 2020. On waste, the results of our most recent survey reveal that only 3% of our members' food and packaging waste is now sent to landfill, keeping us on track to reach our target of sending zero waste to landfill by 2015.
Andrew Kuyk, FDF's Director of Sustainability, said:
“Through Five-fold, food and drink manufacturers have committed to ambitious voluntary targets, embedding good environmental practices within their core business operations to deliver truly sustainable growth. Working in partnership with independent bodies such as WRAP and partners across the supply chain, our industry has been able to ensure continued progress against these stretching targets to a point where we are ahead of schedule, despite increasing our output to meet growing demand. We are also continuing to work with our suppliers, customers and other stakeholders to build sustainability and resilience across the value chain as part of our broader aims.”
Leendert den Hollander, CEO, Young's Seafood and Chair, FDF's Sustainability Steering Group, said:
“As the new chair of FDF's Sustainability Steering Group, it is great to see the industry coming together to raise our collective environmental performance through the sharing of expertise and insights, and the drive for action by member companies. FDF's Five-fold Environmental Ambition remains our roadmap for delivering quantifiable achievements and this latest report again highlights the impressive progress made.”
