Middleburg and Charleston resident Lucy Duncan has won a prestigious award from the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). Her firm, Safe Ports of Charleston, SC, was distinguished by DLA for providing Outstanding Readiness Support in Afghanistan. The award recognizes Safe Ports in two categories: as a Small Business and as a Woman Owned Business. The award is presented at the Business Alliance Awards Ceremony at Fort Belvoir, VA on October 29, 2013.
Lucy commented that “We are honored to be recognized with this prestigious award. Nominations originate in the field. Senior U.S. Military Commanders have consistently recognized Safe Ports’ DLA Distribution Kandahar, Afghanistan as one of the best contractor-run distribution facilities in the entire DLA Distribution system. Underscoring the importance of this award, Safe Ports team endures extremely harsh environmental conditions (heat, sand, dust, temperature extremes), and an ever- present “war-zone atmosphere” where incoming rocket attacks are routine. Under these conditions, Safe Ports has developed battle-proven supply chain logistics competencies. We expect that our knowledge and highest performance achievements will be valued in future mission critical logistics engagements anywhere in the world.”
Safe Ports Director in Kandahar, Barron Marcee, added, “Safe Ports is committed to assurance of total safety and awareness. To date, DLA Distribution Kandahar reports zero injuries, zero casualties, zero lost man days – and, we are now approaching a benchmark of one million man hours worked without a reportable injury. We are proud to support the DLA and will continue to support this mission to the end.”
Ray Rodon, retired U.S. Army Colonel, Executive Vice President, said, “I am very proud of the work being accomplished in support of America’s warfighters in Afghanistan by our team.”
In Charleston on 11 October, Lucy provided the keynote address at The Citadel’s conference on Homeland Security and Intelligence: Southeast Region Security & Intelligence (SERSI) Conference "Securing Our Intelligence & Protecting Our Ports." The Conference was held at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston. The keynote speech tied together the themes of narco-trafficking, terrorism funding, and constantly evolving cyber threats to world ports and American business infrastructure.
The SERSI conference hosted professionals and academics from disciplines and agencies devoted to national security and intelligence production and analysis. Conference panels dealt with challenges related to Port and Maritime Security, Emergency Preparedness, Port Security Best Practices.
The SERSI conference kicked off The Citadel’s new graduate program focusing on Security Studies and Intelligence Analysis. Lucy is on the Advisory Board of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences, which meets throughout the year, and will advise on curriculum development and, in keeping with the tradition of The Citadel's historic role in defending the country, will advise on strategic partnerships and policy focus for the School to develop, particularly regarding Intelligence Education and Law Enforcement and Intelligence.
Board Members volunteer their time and show their personal commitment by pledging regular annual gifts to The Citadel Foundation.
Ms. Duncan said that she is “deeply honored by the appointment to the Board and looks forward to working closely with other Board members to establish and maximize the working relationships in the professional security community that will benefit the School.
