FDF supports Farm Africa's 'Dig for Good' expedition
On 1 May leading women executives from across the UK food industry will complete a six day project in western Kenya as part of farming charity Farm Africa's 'Dig for Good' initiative.
Farm Africa works directly with small-holder farmers in eastern Africa to give them the tools and technical skills to grow enough food for their families and links them to markets to sell the extra they produce to generate household income. During this project industry colleagues have worked alongside a women's farming cooperative to dig a fishpond and help set the rural community up in fish farming.
With support from FDF, a silver sponsor, the all-women team led by Sainsbury's Director of Brand, Judith Batchelar, have been working with around 16 local women farmers to dig a fishpond the size of a leisure centre swimming pool (approximately 300m2) over four days of hard labour. When finished the pond will be stocked with tilapia fingerlings which over the coming months will grow to deliver a harvest of sustainable tilapia, providing nutritious food for families and additional to sell to a ready market for this community of budding entrepreneurs.
