Ottawa Cosmetic Dentist Shares a New Approach for Testing Toothpaste Abrasiveness

/EINPresswire.com/ OTTAWA, ONTARIO - Patients have lots of choices for dental products, and differentiating between them is hard. Fraunhofer Institute researchers in Germany have developed a new test to measure toothpaste's abrasiveness.

Ottawa cosmetic dentist Dr. David Bartos wants patients to make smart choices about their dental hygiene products. He and his partner Dr. Mark Northcott are interested in how the new toothpaste test will change the dental product market.

Good toothpastes have tiny abrasive elements that remove lingering food particles and developing plaque from teeth. Some toothpaste can be too abrasive, resulting in deteriorating enamel and dentin.

The old method uses test brushes that go over radioactively labeled dentin samples. Researchers analyze the samples after brushing to determine a radioactive dentin abrasion (RDA) value for each toothpaste. This method has been questioned, as labs have found varying RDA values for the same toothpaste. Researchers thought the process could use improvement.

The new method they created starts with diluting the toothpaste with saliva and water to simulate normal brushing. Then the researchers used different toothpaste brands and a single toothbrush bristle held by an instrument to simulate brushing on real human teeth. The instrument moved vertically and in circles making more than 8,000 tiny circles on the teeth. A very delicate instrument then calculated how deeply the toothpaste penetrated the teeth. This method is easier and less timely.

"Our findings reveal that the RDA value of toothpastes correlates with the depth of abrasion; the higher the value, the greater the abrasion," says Dr. Andreas Kiesow. "By analyzing the friction value we also identified a clear relationship between the friction behaviors of the bristle on the dental enamel and the abrasiveness of the toothpaste."

Kiesow, the study's head researcher, says this method is more true to the way people brush their teeth, as it includes saliva and toothbrush bristles into its test.
