WASHINGTON - U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced $6 million in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants for North Carolina airports.

"This funding will keep aircraft moving safely and efficiently at two important North Carolina airports," Secretary LaHood said. "Investing in our nation's airports promotes economic growth."

The FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants will fund a runway safety area (RSA) that meets FAA design standards at the Pitt-Greenville Airport in Greenville; rehabilitate the existing runway, taxiway and apron pavement for Harnett Regional Jetport in Harnett County; and update the Airports System Plan Study for the state of North Carolina.

"These grants will improve safety and keep traffic moving at North Carolina's airports, allowing them to continue to provide quality service to their passengers," said Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.

Construction for Pitt-Greenville will begin next year and be completed in 2014. The Harnett Regional Jetport project will start in April 2013 and will take four months to complete. North Carolina's Airports System Plan Study Phase 1 is expected to be completed in October 2013.

AIP provides $3.35 billion in annual funding for airport improvement projects that are vital to maintaining the safety, capacity, and environmental stewardship of our nation's airports. More than 3,300 airports are eligible for AIP grants benefiting commercial passengers, cargo operations, and general aviation activities throughout the nation.
