News Release By Glenn Roberts Jr. • April 3, 2019 DESI “first light” image of the Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as Messier 51. This image was obtained the first night of observing with the DESI Commissioning Instrument on the Mayall Telescope at the Kitt …
This video shows an animated structural model of TFIIH, a large protein assembly that helps repair and read our genome. Berkeley Lab scientists used an advanced cryo-electron microscope to generate the first-ever atomic map of TFIIH’s structure. (Credit: …
The atomic structure of the SOS protein, a cell messaging molecule that uses a unique timing mechanism to regulate activation of a critical immune system pathway. (Credit: Steven Alvarez/Berkeley Lab) For the first time ever, scientists have imaged the …
Research Scientist Antoine Snijders (right) and postdoc Pin Wang analyze mouse blood samples. (Credit: Marilyn Chung/Berkeley Lab) Mice have been instrumental in the study of cancer, but like all animal models of human diseases, they have their limitations …
This animation shows how Fermi arc states form a spiraling structure in a crystal material that serves as a topological conductor. (Credit: Hasan Lab/Princeton University) The realization of so-called topological materials – which exhibit exotic, defect- …
Alan “Al” Smith places an aluminum sample exposed to radiation at Berkeley Lab’s Bevatron accelerator into a lead and concrete box containing a detector at a low-level radiation counting facility in this 1950s photograph. (Credit: Berkeley Lab) Note: This …
Mina J. Bissell. (Credit: Berkeley Lab) Mina Bissell, a distinguished scientist at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), has been selected to receive two prestigious awards for her pioneering contributions to …
Credit: iStock.com/horstgerlach With an estimated daily fuel demand of more than 5 million barrels per day, the global aviation sector is incredibly energy-intensive and almost entirely reliant on petroleum-based fuels. Unlike other energy sectors such as …
The proton spin puzzle: Scientists want to know how different constituents of the proton contribute to its spin, a fundamental property that plays a role in how these building blocks give rise to nearly all visible matter in the universe. Pieces of the …
A tree’s growth is dependent on nutrients from the soil and water, as well as the microbes in, on, and around the roots. Similarly, a human’s health is shaped both by environmental factors and the body’s interactions with the microbiome, particularly in …
Engineered living materials (ELMs), which use living cells as “materials scaffolds,” are a new class of material that might open the door to self-healing materials. (Credit: iStock/Pi-Lens) When the inside of a mollusk shell shimmers in sunlight, the …
Passalid beetles work together in family units to defend their log tunnel homes and care for their young into adulthood. New Berkeley Lab research has now shown that the beetle’s distinct gut microbiome also helps its young survive. (Credit: Javier Ceja- …
This animation displays a scan of arrow-shaped flakes of a 2D material. Samples were scanned across their electron energy, momentum, and horizontal and vertical coordinates using an X-ray-based technique known as nanoARPES at Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light …
The DNA belonging to the community of microbes in a water sample can give scientists clues about the ecosystem as a whole. However, this photo was not taken in association with the study. (Credit: iStock.com/Irina Vodneva) When you hear about the …
A method developed by a Berkeley Lab-led research team may one day turn ordinary semiconducting materials into quantum electronic devices. (Credit: iStock.com/NiPlot) A team of researchers led by the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National …
A schematic of the electrochemical cell containing a platinum electrode and sulfuric acid. X-rays are used to study the molecular details at the interface, within only three to four layers of water molecules near the solid surface. (Credit: Lauren Chong/ …
This nanoscale “playground” on a chip uses nanomagnets to simulate the formation of exotic magnetic particles called “monopoles.” (Credit: Farhan/Berkeley Lab) A research team led by the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory ( …
This animation shows a plasma channel’s electron density profile (blue) formed inside a sapphire tube (gray) with the combination of an electrical discharge and an 8-nanosecond laser pulse (red, orange, and yellow). Time is shown in nanoseconds. This …
This video provides an overview of the R&D effort to upgrade an electron microscope at Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Foundry with a superfast detector, the 4D Camera. The detector, which is linked to a supercomputer at Berkeley Lab via a high-speed data …
