Illinois Communities Opt for Green Power
The City of Evanston, Illinois selected Constellation Energy to be the city's community choice aggregation (CCA) electricity provider. In response to the recently approved CCA referendum, which was supported by 73 percent of Evanston voters, the Evanston City Council voted unanimously to purchase electricity from Constellation Energy. Constellation Energy will provide Evanston with 100 percent renewable electricity for a term of 12 months at a rate of $.04797 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which is about 38 percent lower than the city's current residential electric rate. Renewable energy for the program will be provided by the purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs) from wind projects in Illinois and adjacent states.
The City of Peoria, Illinois selected Homefield Energy as the city's CCA electricity provider. Homefield Energy will provide 100 percent renewable electricity to Peoria over a two-year period, at a rate of $.0408 per kWh. Renewable electricity for Peoria's CCA program will be provided by the purchase of RECs, sourced from various renewable energy projects. Customers will be receiving opt-out letters by the end of May, and will have 15 days to respond if they do not wish to participate in the CCA program.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designated the Village of Oak Park, Illinois as a Green Power Community for choosing renewable energy sources for its CCA program. Green Power Communities are cities, towns and villages whose local government, businesses and residents collectively purchase green power in amounts that meet or exceed EPA's green power purchasing requirements. Oak Park uses 191 million kWh of green power annually, and ranks first among Green Power Communities in terms of the percentage green power, with about 83 percent of the village's total electricity use provided by green power.
