Dear Senator,

On behalf of more than two million Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I urge you to support two budgets when they come to a vote this week: the House-passed budget resolution (H.Con.Res. 112) and Senator Toomey’s “Restoring Balance” budget resolution (S.Con.Res. 37). Both are credible proposals to cut government spending, usher in pro-growth tax reform, and put two of the nation’s big-spending entitlement programs back on a sustainable fiscal path.

I urge you to vote YES on both H.Con.Res. 112 and S.Con.Res. 37. Americans for Prosperity will rate these votes in our congressional ratings.

In February, the President sent a highly-unserious budget proposal to Congress. Despite calling for $2 trillion in tax hikes, it still would add $6 trillion to our national debt over the next decade. Instead of fixing Medicaid and Medicare, two key drivers of Washington’s spending problem, it either makes the problem worse by creating new entitlements (as it does for Medicaid) or hands the problem over to a panel of unaccountable bureaucrats (as it does for Medicare). Not a single member of the House of Representatives voted in support of the President’s budget.

Chairman Paul Ryan’s budget, passed by the House in March, represents an entirely different vision for the future. It cuts spending by $187 billion in the very first year when compared to the President’s budget (and by $5.3 trillion over a decade). Instead of raising taxes, it cuts both individual and corporate rates and eliminates special tax subsidies that merely distort the economy. It introduces “premium support” for Medicare to preserve senior’s choices as health care consumers while using market competition, not bureaucratic mandates, to drive down costs. And it empowers states to find more cost-effective ways to serve those in need by converting federal funding for Medicaid into a block grant.

Senator Toomey’s “Restoring Balance” budget is similar, but improves upon the Ryan budget in a few areas. Discretionary spending is cut even further to fully offset the scheduled Defense sequestration cuts. Overall federal spending is cut by an additional $860 billion over the next decade and the budget balances by the year 2020. Medicaid’s inflated price tag is reined in even further by freezing funding for the new block grants until 2017.
