TEAD noise propagation statement

TOOELE, Utah (September 14, 2026) – During routine demilitarization operations today, Tooele Army Depot conducted the controlled destruction of obsolete, unserviceable, and potentially unsafe munitions. Sound and ground vibration from these operations traveled farther than normally experienced in surrounding communities.

We recognize that the unexpected noise and vibration may have startled residents and disrupted their day, and we apologize for the concern this caused.

As America’s Depot, part of our mission is to safely remove obsolete and unserviceable munitions from the nation’s stockpile while ensuring the ammunition provided to our Soldiers and the Joint Force remains safe, reliable, and ready when needed.

Open detonation is one of the approved methods used to safely destroy certain types of munitions and, depending on the munition and its condition, may be the safest and most effective method of disposal. Tooele Army Depot also employs alternative demilitarization methods whenever appropriate and feasible.

Following today’s event, depot personnel are reviewing the conditions and other factors that may have contributed to the unusually widespread sound and vibration. We continually evaluate our operations to minimize impacts to surrounding communities while safely accomplishing this important mission.

Tooele Army Depot values its relationship with our neighboring communities. We remain committed to conducting our mission safely, responsibly, and transparently while being a good neighbor to those who live and work around the depot.
