Walton Commissioners Recognize Three Groups for Excellence
Walton Commissioners Recognize Three Groups for
Excellence and Achievement
The Walton County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) recognized three different groups at the beginning of their regular meeting on Tuesday. District 2 Commissioner Danny Glidewell introduced the DeFuniak Springs Little League softball team and coaches.
Commissioner Glidewell explained that the All-Star softball team recently competed in the State Championship and finished as a Runner-Up, “which is the first time in a long time, so we would like to recognize that team.”
The Commissioners posed for a photo with the team members and coaches, to the applause of the audience.
Next, Program Development Outreach Coordinator Meredith Crum introduced graduates of the 2026 Citizens Academy. Mrs. Crum noted that the Citizens Academy has provided local residents with the opportunity to learn more about how local government operates, how decisions are made and about the many departments, programs and services that serve the community.
“Throughout this Academy, participants have taken the time to engage with County staff, ask questions, learn about the challenges facing Walton County and gain a better understanding of the responsibilities involved in local government,” she said. “These graduates have invested the time and energy because they care about Walton County and want to become more informed and engaged citizens,” she added.
The graduates were each presented with certificates of achievement and goodie bags in celebration of the successful conclusion of the course. The Commissioners and staff gathered with them for a class photograph.
The third BCC recognition went to Walton County Purchasing Department staff. Chief Financial Officer Melissa Thomason explained that this was the department’s first application for the top award from the National Procurement Institute and it encompasses a year’s worth of work.
“It is a very rigorous application process. It is a program to benchmark organizational excellence in procurement. This focuses on practical documented work, as well as leadership and contributions that advance the public procurement profession,” she said. “It is an award that recognizes excellence across a broad range of best practices, including innovation, professionalism, leadership, continuous improvement, e-procurement and organizational excellence.”
Purchasing Department Director Jason Cutshaw said the award means a lot to the entire office and he thanked the staff members who were present. “It’s definitely a team of ‘We’ and not an individual,” he said. Director Cutshaw thanked his staff for their excellence, as well as the Commissioners, Administration and the Legal department for their trust, support and assistance. He also thanked Mrs. Thomason for her steadfast support and encouragement throughout the year.
Mrs. Thomason revealed that following the Institute’s announcement regarding the award, Director Cutshaw was asked to serve as the Institute’s treasurer next year. She concluded by saying that she could not be more proud of Director Cutshaw and the entire procurement team.
