Vintage 2025 Housing Unit and Subcounty Population Estimates
The U.S. Census Bureau released its Vintage 2025 housing unit and subcounty population estimates on May 14, 2026. Since Hawai‘i has no incorporated places, Urban Honolulu is the state’s only subcounty area updated annually. Its population stood at 341,868 on July 1, 2025, down 2.5% from April 2020.

Hawai‘i’s housing inventory grew while its population declined. From April 2020 to July 2025, the number of housing units statewide increased 2.4%, while the population decreased 1.4%. Hawai‘i County recorded the strongest housing growth at 5.5%. Maui County’s housing inventory declined 0.6% following the 2023 wildfires.

The U.S. Census Bureau released its Vintage 2025 population estimates by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin on June 25, 2026.

Hawai‘i’s population continued to age faster than the nation. Adults age 65 and older accounted for 22.6% of the state’s population in 2025, up from 19.5% in 2020. Hawai‘i’s median age rose to 42.1 years, compared with 39.4 years nationwide. Asian alone remained the state’s largest race group at 36.7%.
