From expanding nutrition programs to modernizing adult protective services, DARS has taken major steps to support older Virginians and those with disabilities. These highlights represent just a portion of our ongoing work.
- Expanded Nutrition Program: A $1.6M grant expanded the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program from less than 50% coverage in 2022 to 100% statewide by 2024—bringing fresh, local food to over 32,000 low-income seniors through local Area Agencies on Aging and governments.
- 24/7 Online APS Reporting: Adult Protective Services now offers 24/7 secure online reporting, replacing the prior phone-only process and enabling quicker responses to over 45,000 reports annually.
- Real Pay for Real Jobs: Since 2022, more than 600 Virginians with disabilities have moved from subminimum wage to integrated, competitive employment through this initiative.
- No Wrong Door Services: More than 133,000 individuals were connected to community-based services in 2024 through the No Wrong Door network, helping 92% avoid institutional care.
- Consistent Guardian Training Statewide: All guardians of incapacitated adults now complete standardized online training via a new DARS portal, replacing paper processes and ensuring statewide consistency.
