River Safety Advisory

Residents and visitors are urged to use extreme caution when recreating along rivers and creeks throughout Yakima County this summer.

Significant flooding during the winter of 2025–2026 has dramatically altered conditions along many local waterways, including the Yakima and Naches Rivers, which are popular destinations for swimming, paddling, fishing, and other recreational activities along the Yakima Greenway.

Although many access points remain open, river conditions may be very different from previous years. Floodwaters have reshaped channels, changed water depths, altered currents, and introduced new hazards throughout the river corridor.

Areas that were once deep may now be shallow, while new deep holes and scour pools may have formed. Gravel bars and sand deposits may appear in unexpected locations, and familiar navigation routes may have changed.

Flooding has also moved or introduced hazards such as trees, root wads, logs, and other woody debris. Some hazards may be visible above the water, while others remain hidden below the surface.

River currents may be stronger and less predictable than in previous years. New channels and constricted flow paths can create swift currents, turbulent water, eddies, and boils in unfamiliar locations. Riverbanks may also be unstable, undercut, or prone to collapse.

Shorelines, beaches, boat launches, and river access areas may have been damaged or altered by high water. Use caution when entering or exiting the water and avoid standing on unstable banks.

Before visiting local rivers, check current conditions and weather forecasts, inform someone of your plans, and ensure your boat and safety equipment are in good working order. While on the water, always wear a properly fitted life jacket, stay alert for changing conditions, scout unfamiliar sections before proceeding, and give debris and obstacles a wide berth.

If conditions appear unsafe, turn around. No recreational activity is worth risking injury or loss of life.

The river you knew last year may not be the river you encounter today. Extra caution, awareness, and preparation can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone this summer.

Stay Alert • Wear a Life Jacket • Respect the River

For your safety, expect changing conditions and exercise caution throughout Yakima County's rivers.
