Improvements to the facility will improve capacity and help keep waste moving efficiently as demand grows
EVERETT, Wash., June 15, 2026 – Snohomish County will begin making improvements to its Everett Intermodal Facility in north Everett on June 15. The work is part of a multi-year multi-phase process that is expected to greatly improve the county’s ability to transport the area’s solid waste to regional landfills in eastern Washington.
Due to increased volumes of solid waste throughout the county for export, Snohomish County plans to expand the existing Everett Intermodal Facility by adding a new yard track and improved container storage area to the intermodal yard. The primary purpose of this phase of the project is to increase the rail yard facilities’ operating capacity by nearly 25 percent. Snohomish County currently leases currently the 15.77-acre Everett Transfer Facility to Regional Disposal Company (RDC). RDC uses the site to load and offload refuse containers shipped by rail to and from the RDC-owned landfill in Roosevelt, Wash.
The $4.43 million project will involve three components: constructing a new rail spur, paving a new stacking pad, and constructing stormwater upgrades. The project is the first phase of the overall project that will include pavement improvements, additional on-site storage and relocating and realigning the main line.
The county processes nearly 665,000 tons of garbage annually through its three transfer stations in Everett, Mountlake Terrace and Arlington. Garbage is also collected at drop box locations in Granite Falls, on Dubuque Road and in Sultan. The garbage is shipped by trucks to the intermodal yard and then placed on trains for transport to Roosevelt.
“Managing the county’s garbage becomes more challenging every year as our communities continue to grow,” said Snohomish County Solid Waste Director David Schonhard. “These improvements are an important step toward strengthening our system so we can keep pace with demand. By expanding our rail capacity and modernizing the site, we’re ensuring we can continue moving waste efficiently and reliably for years to come.”
