The Southwick Broadside is a rare, historically significant printing of the Declaration of Independence. Printed by Newport, Rhode Island printer Solomon Southwick in July 1776, this official state broadside was used to disseminate the news of American independence to Rhode Island citizens.
Because broadsides were intended as temporary, single-use posters to be read and discarded, only about 7 to 8 copies of the Southwick Broadside survive today and one belongs to the Town of West Greenwich!
The History: On July 6, 1776, a copy of the original "Dunlap Broadside" arrived in Rhode Island. By authority of the General Assembly, Solomon Southwick set type from the Dunlap copy and printed around 29 to 36 copies to be distributed to every town clerk in the colony.
