RER collects Convention and Tourist Taxes

Hotels, restaurants and rental living accommodations that are required to pay Convention and Tourist Taxes now have to remit their payments to the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources, effective October 1, 2024.

Previously collected by the Office of the Tax Collector, the bed tax, food and beverage taxes and the homeless and domestic violence taxes, known together as the Convention and Tourist Taxes, are now collected by RER’s Business Section, found in the Consumer and Neighborhood Protection Division. All business owners and operators that collect these taxes must submit a tax return monthly, even if no taxes are collected. Tax payments and returns are due on the first day of each month following the month of collections from tenants, guests and customers. They will be considered late if not filed and paid by the 20th of that month.

Beginning with the October 2024 return, which must be filed and paid by November 20, 2024 to avoid late penalties, all returns must be filed using the TouristExpress online system. Paper returns will no longer be accepted.

For any question, businesses can still contact the same phone number for service that they used to call at the Tax Collector’s Office at 305-375-5550 or via email at [email protected]
