Information Release

Montrose, Colo.- On March 24, visitors to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison reported spotting a body approximately 800 feet down from the Gunnison Point Overlook on the South Rim. Responding National Park Service Rangers climbed to the scene and determined the individual had no signs of life. The decedent was placed into a body bag per the Montrose County Coroner’s Office request. 

On March 25, the decedent was brought to a helipad and pronounced dead by a Montrose County Coroner’s Investigator and transported to Community Hospital in Grand Junction for an autopsy. 

An autopsy was performed on March 27 and the decedent was positively identified as Paul J. Shallcross, a 40-year-old from the Denver area. Next of kin have been notified of the incident. 

The cause and manner are still under investigation at this time.
