Learn how to protect your property from wildfire at May 9 Open House

Douglas County Emergency Management, Colorado State University and local agencies are teaming up to bring resources to residents

Do you have questions about how to protect your home from wildfire? Following a warmer-than-average winter and below-normal moisture, wildfire risk is trending higher across Douglas County. To help residents prepare, Douglas County, in partnership with Colorado State University, is hosting a Wildfire Mitigation Open House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 9, at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

This free, family-friendly event gives residents a chance to connect one-on-one with experts and get practical, real-world guidance on protecting their homes and property before peak wildfire season arrives.

At the open house, residents can:

  • Ask experts about defensible space and home hardening strategies
  • Learn what Douglas County and local fire agencies are doing right now to reduce wildfire risk
  • Get clarity on home insurance challenges and coverage in wildfire-prone areas
  • Understand current building codes and how they impact home safety
  • Discover tools, resources, and programs available to help safeguard their property
  • View the equipment used to fight fires in Douglas County
  • Grab snacks and beverages from local food trucks

Representatives from Douglas County, local fire districts, wildfire mitigation specialists, and insurance professionals will be available to answer questions and provide personalized guidance.

“The warm and dry conditions this year are a reminder that wildfire preparedness needs to start early,” said Mike Alexander, Director of the Office of Emergency Management. “This event is about giving residents the information and confidence they need to take action and protect their property”

Whether you live in a high-risk area or simply want to be better prepared, all residents are encouraged to attend.

Date: Saturday, May 9
