Annual Fire Hydrant Flushing Program

The City and County of Broomfield's Annual Fire Hydrant Flushing Program is critical maintenance that ensures high-quality drinking water and peak hydrant condition for firefighting. The Fire Hydrant Flushing Program will start on Sunday, March 29, and will take approximately five weeks to flush 4,545 hydrants throughout Broomfield.

Even during droughts, flushing is a necessary and responsible maintenance activity. The process is carefully managed and targeted to minimize waste while preventing water quality degradation. Maintaining hydrant functionality is especially critical during elevated fire risk.  Identifying and addressing deficiencies ensures reliable operation during fire fighting emergencies.

Controlled flushing removes sediment and minerals that naturally build up in water mains and prevents taste, odor and discoloration issues from developing in Broomfield’s water system. Flushing also serves as a proactive inspection of valve function, flow capacity and mechanical condition.Street Sweeping Operations will be conducted prior to flushing operations to reduce potential pollutant impacts from flushing.
