Guatemala Foreign Minister Addresses AJC Luncheon
April 9, 2012 – New York – Guatemalan Foreign Minister Harold Caballeros, addressing an AJC luncheon, declared his country’s continuous support for the state of Israel.
“We will always support Israel. It’s a matter of conviction,” said Caballeros, adding that Guatemala has enjoyed positive relations with Israel since its founding in 1948.
AJC National President Robert Elman, welcoming the foreign minister to AJC headquarters, noted that Guatemala today is in a key international position, holding one of the rotating seats on the UN Security Council.
The global advocacy organization has long enjoyed close relations with Guatemala and with the country’s Jewish community.
An AJC delegation, led by David Harris, AJC Executive Director, and Dina Siegel Vann, director of AJC’s Latino and Latin American Institute, visited Guatemala in February shortly after the new, democratically elected government took office. In Guatemala City they met with Caballeros and President Otto Perez Molina.
During the New York lunch meeting, Caballeros said his government’s domestic priorities are assuring peace and security, defending human rights, fighting hunger and promoting economic development.
The foreign minister updated the AJC leaders on efforts to achieve Temporary Protected Status for Guatemalans currently in the U.S. TPS, which allows non-citizens residing in the U.S. to legally seek employment, is available from for citizens of other Latin American countries, including Honduras and Nicaragua.
Senior leadership of AJC regional offices in New York City, New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester attended the April 3 luncheon.
