ISASI 2025 - Soaring To New Heights: A World of Innovation

The International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI) acknowledged Robert's lifetime commitment and achievements to aviation safety.

DENVER, CO, UNITED STATES, October 16, 2025 /EINPresswire.com/ -- On October 1, 2025, at the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI) Annual Training Seminar in Denver, Colorado, Mr. Robert MacIntosh received the Robert F. Lederer Award.

Mr. MacIntosh started his aviation career at the Ohio State University School of Aviation. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska and a Master of Business from Webster University in St. Louis. During his 22-year career with the United States Air Force he flew a variety of aircraft from heavy transport to executive jets. He was also a T-38 instructor pilot and a production flight test pilot for the Sabreliner military group. He held several flight safety positions with the Air Force, including Flight Safety Officer, Director of Safety, and Chief of Operations and Flight Safety. He served a combat tour in Vietnam and was also an Air Attache in Latin America. During his military career, he sought to influence young officers in their approach to flight safety and accident prevention and investigated over 20 accidents.

After retiring from the military, Bob had an extensive career in civil aviation, including Director of Corporate Safety for Saudi Arabian Airlines and Royal Jordanian Airlines. He was also a staff engineer/investigator with Beech aircraft.

In 1988, Bob accepted employment with the National Transportation Safety Board. He was the NTSB report writer for the Aloha Airlines accident in the Pacific Ocean (explosive depression, structural failure), and the Investigator-in-Charge (IIC) on numerous other major accidents including United Airlines in Sioux City, Iowa (total loss of hydraulic power), and U. S. Air, Los Angeles, California (runway collision). In addition, he was the U.S. accredited representative on numerous foreign accidents, including Lauda, AirInter, LAPA, and the Concorde accident. He was also responsible from 2001 for coordinating the Safety Board’s international safety initiatives as the Chief Advisor, International Safety Affairs. Since retirement in 2011, he continues participating with the global aviation safety community.

Bob’s contribution to ISASI cannot be measured in years, but rather in decades. He joined ISASI in 1978 and proceeded to give presentations, work on committees, contribute to Forum and chair session at the seminar. He was approved as a “Fellow” in 2017 and became a “Life Member” upon reaching age 70. However, his largest contribution was as Treasurer from 2012 to 2022, where he changed and updated the entire financial process for ISASI, allowing ISASI to have computer generated custom financial reports and a simplified filing of federal and local taxes.

Bob has worked in many facets of the aviation industry. Throughout his career he has conducted university courses and lectured on aviation subjects at academic institutions, training academies, professional forums, U.S. State Department Foreign Service Institute, FAA and foreign government DGCA agencies, domestic and foreign airlines, and pilot union sponsored air safety events. He holds an FAA Airline Transport Certificate with over 8,000 hours of flight experience.

Bob is an aviation safety professional of the highest degree. His background, training, skills, and experience have resulted in numerous changes to training programs, operations, and management in military and civil aviation. There is no doubt that his 60 plus years in the industry have made a very positive impact on aviation safety.

ABOUT THE JEROME F. LEDERER AWARD
The award was created to honor Jerome F. Lederer, whose recognition as a leader in the world of aviation safety since its infancy earned him the title of “Father of Aviation Safety.” He was bestowed this title by Congress in 1997. He served as the second President of ISASI and was later granted the title of President Emeritus, which he held until his death in 2004 at the age of 101 years.
