AJC Praises Second Arrest in New Jersey Synagogue Attacks

March 3, 2012 – New York – AJC praised New Jersey law enforcement for arresting a second suspect in the January fire-bombings of two synagogues.

“New Jersey authorities have shown they will fully investigate and bring to justice all responsible for these despicable hate crimes against the Jewish community,” said John Rosen, director of AJC’s New Jersey Region.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli announced Friday the arrest of Aakash Dalal, 19. On January 24, Anthony Graziano, 19, was arrested and charged with nine counts of attempted murder, bias intimidation, arson and aggravated arson. Molinelli said the two men were friends and collaborated on attacking the two synagogues.

“Both men should be prosecuted and, if convicted, sentenced to the full extent of the law,” said Rosen.

On January 11, in Rutherford, Congregation Beth-El Rabbi Nosson Schuman and his family escaped after Molotov cocktails ignited their home next to the synagogue. A Paramus synagogue was attacked on January 3. Prosecutors suggested that Dalal and Graziano are responsible also for incidents of vandalism, anti-Semitic graffiti at synagogues in Hackensack and Maywood that preceded the fire-bombings.
