Crane Collapse at Kent County Jail Injures 3

Grand Rapids, MI — A crane collapse at the Kent County Jail injured three people and placed the facility on lockdown Friday morning, February 10, 2012, around 9 a.m., reported MLive.com.
According to reports, the crane fell onto a portion of under-construction jail addition, which damaged the nearby garage area where the sheriff’s department’s vehicle fleet is stored.
The main jail where the inmates are house was not damaged, but there were apparent water leak problems.
Three people were injured, which included one construction worker and two Kent County Jail inmate trustees. They were reportedly in the garage/carport area of the complex when the collapse occurred, which threw glass in their eyes and ears. Their injuries are said to be minor.
The identities of the victims are being withheld at this time.
It is unknown at this time what caused the crane to collapse.
Investigators with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be looking into the construction accident.
