Fujitsu Honored with Kawasaki Environmental Show-Window Award

Feb 14, 2012 (PRN): Fujitsu today announced that it has received the "Kawasaki Environmental Show-Window Award," presented by Kawasaki City, for the introduction of environmental reference model at its Kawasaki Plant. This award recognizes the effectiveness of Fujitsu's energy-saving initiatives, including the development of an environmental-management dashboard that monitors energy usage and the introduction of a cloud computing-based "Engineering Cloud" manufacturing environment.

About the Kawasaki Environmental Show-Window Award

To encourage the development of technology in the fields of energy conservation and energy creation, and to help further the use of environmentally conscious products, Kawasaki City promotes its Kawasaki Environmental Show-Window initiative under the theme of highlighting environmentally conscious technology. As part of this initiative, the city has established the "Kawasaki Environmental Show-Window Award," which highlights outstanding efforts by companies within the city to produce effective results by deploying technologies and products related to energy conservation and energy creation.

Rationale for Selection

In order to contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of customers and society, the Fujitsu Group performed in-house implementation of advanced green ICT and the latest environmental footprint reduction technologies, and subsequently developed an environmental reference model derived from its accumulated environmental know-how. Fujitsu was recognized for the impact of its development of an environmental-management dashboard and the introduction of an "Engineering Cloud" at its Kawasaki plant.

1. Environmental-Management Dashboard

The environmental-management dashboard is an information system that collects and analyzes data, ranging from managerial to environmental information. It leverages this data to suit the objectives of the user. Information handled by this system includes data required in the decision-making and judgment processes of executives and energy management teams, as well as information needed for autonomous action by general employees. By displaying a browser webpage that contains information such as hourly energy usage, CO2 emission target progress for each office, comparisons with the previous year's energy performance, and even energy demand forecasts for the current day, users can quickly implement necessary measures - such as making decisions, issuing instructions, and taking actions - depending on their objectives. Moreover, the system has been employed as part of Fujitsu's own power-saving efforts this past summer and current winter.

2. Engineering Cloud

Fujitsu's Engineering Cloud is a cloud-based design and development environment for improving the quality and efficiency of design and development, shortening development term, and realizing business continuity and security. Fujitsu's leading-edge high-speed graphic compression technology makes it possible to reduce data transfer volumes by roughly 90%, while at the same time enabling users to effortlessly take advantage of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and other advanced tools without requiring access to task-specific servers or a high-performance workstation. In addition, images and design data can be shared even in remote areas, regardless of time or location. Fujitsu promotes to reduce its power consumption through cloud-based server integration and the use of thin-client terminals.
