Four Enforcement Orders Served in January

Wednesday, 8 February 2012

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today reported that four Closure Orders were served on food businesses during the month of January for breaches in food safety legislation, pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998 and the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010.  The Enforcement Orders served in January were issued by EHOs in the HSE West Region and the HSE Dublin Mid Leinster Region.

Closure Orders were served on:

  • Knox Street Bistro, Knox Street, Ballyhaunis, Mayo
  • Taste of Indis, Unit 2 Castle View Court, Main Street, Kildare
  • Jai Ho Indian restaurant, 114 Rock Road, Booterstown, Co. Dublin
  • Jewel in the Crown , 5 South William Street, Dublin

During the month of January,a prosecution was carried out by the HSE Dublin Mid Leinster Region on Midland butchers, The Square, Tallaght, Dublin City.

Commenting Prof Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, FSAI, stated that similar non-compliance issues and breaches of food safety legislation keep recurring in food businesses. These include poor cleaning and sanitising, as well as improper storage of foodstuffs.

“It is disappointing that avoidable food safety infringements that could pose a risk to consumer health continue to occur.  With proper maintenance of a food safety management system, a significant number of food businesses would not find themselves facing enforcement action.  It is a food business operator’s legal responsibility to take the necessary steps to ensure that the food they serve and sell to their customers is safe to eat.  There is no excuse for shoddy practices.  If any food business operator is unsure of what is required of them by law, they can contact our advice line (1890 336677) or visit our website,” Prof Reilly states.

Details of the food businesses served with these Enforcement Orders are published on our website.  Closure Orders and Improvement Orders will remain listed on the website for a period of three months from the date of when a premises is adjudged to have corrected its food safety issue, with Prohibition Orders being listed for a period of one month.
