Sacramento, CA — An 18-month-old boy and two adults were killed Saturday, January 28, 2012, when a SUV and a light-rail train collided in Sacramento. The train accident occurred just south of downtown, just after 4 p.m., reported the Associated Press.

Authorities reported that a Nissan Pathfinder drove around the railroad crossing arm and ignored the flashing warning lights, before it collided with the light-rail train that was traveling at about 50 mph—the typical speed in that area.

The light-rail train had reportedly followed two Union Pacific freight trains, which use separate tracks. The crossing arms had remained lowered between the intervals of passing trains.

Responding emergency crews rushed one person in the SUV, a woman in her 30s, to The University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento with serious injuries.

A man and woman inside the SUV, both in their 40s, were pronounced dead at the scene. Firefighters reported that one victim had been ejected in the crash. The toddler was taken to an area hospital where he was too pronounced dead.

EMTs also transported six of the roughly 50 passengers on the train to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

Investigations into the train accident are underway.
