NUJ welcomes Gaza ceasefire deal
The union has called for clear guarantees for press freedom and urged both sides to play their important role in allowing for the safety and protection of all citizens, including brave journalists on frontlines.
Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary, said:
"We welcome news of the ceasefire deal including the release of hostages at this significant moment, and hope it marks the beginning of a new chapter for all impacted by the war. The shocking death toll of at least 163 journalists arising from the conflict has resulted in unimaginable suffering for their families and colleagues.
"As we await publication of the full agreement, we note the monitoring system in place to ensure compliance and urge both sides to play their important role in allowing for the safety and protection of all citizens, including brave journalists on frontlines.
"There must be clear guarantees for press freedom and respect for journalists including those reporting from Gaza. The Israeli government must also act swiftly, allowing international media unfettered access. Now more than ever, both sides must respect the enshrined rights of journalists to carry out their professional duties."
