AUGUSTA – The Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services plans to hold a series of Homeless Veterans Stand Downs throughout the state during October.

These events, designed to support homeless and at-risk veterans, aim to provide connection to housing, access to resources, services, and connections to community organizations dedicated to helping veterans overcome homelessness and other challenges, according to a news release from the bureau.

The Stand Downs will take place on the following Wednesdays:

Oct. 2 at Hannaford, 295 Forest Ave., Portland;
Oct. 9 at Veterans Memorial Park, 2-20 Main St., Lewiston;
Oct. 23 at Tri-County Career Center, 45 Oak St., Bangor; and
Oct. 30 at Mill Park, 2-23 Route 104, Augusta.

Each Stand Down will offer a variety of services, including housing and employment assistance, health screenings and flu shots, mental health and substance use support, clothing and other essential items and free haircuts; lunch will be provided.

MBVS works closely with local organizations, government agencies, and veteran service providers to ensure these events address the unique needs of veterans experiencing homelessness or housing instability. Veterans are encouraged to attend any of the events, where they can connect with resources aimed at improving their health, well-being and overall quality of life.
