DMV ANNOUNCES QUEENS COLLEGE OFFICE LOCATION CLOSING JUNE 27

Temporary DMV Office First Opened in 2020 Following Passage of the ‘Green Light Law’

Three Other Conveniently Located Offices in Queens Remain Open

All Impacted Staff to be Retained and Relocated to Office of Their Choosing

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles will be closing its satellite office located at Queens College, beginning June 27.  Customers who have appointments scheduled at that location after June 27 may visit any other DMV office in the five boroughs including any of the three others conveniently located in Queens, and their reservation will be honored.

“The decision to close the Queens College location was made after a lot of careful consideration,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder.  “It was never intended to be a permanent location and we kept it open for as long as we felt it was needed to assist New Yorkers through the implementation of the Green Light Law and our reopening after COVID.  I am proud to say we are processing customer transactions at our other offices in record time with plenty of capacity for customers.  Additionally, we’ve significantly increased the number of transactions that can be done online to make it as convenient as possible for our customers.”

The DMV has three permanent offices in Queens—College Point, Jamaica, and Springfield Gardens—that will remain open. All offices are conveniently located less than 10 miles from the Queens College location and easily accessible. The average customer who visits one of these locations is in and out in less than 30 minutes.

In addition, there are more online DMV transactions than ever before. There are more than 70 transactions and services at DMV.NY.GOV that customers can use to prepare to visit an office and make their experience as seamless as possible or skip the trip altogether.  Customers can renew a driver license or vehicle registration online, order a duplicate document, request their driving record, pay fees and fines, check the status of their ID, change their address and so much more.

The DMV office at Queens College was first opened in 2020 in response to an unprecedented number of customers visiting DMV offices following the passage of the Driver’s License Access and Privacy Act, commonly called the Green Light Law. During that time, many customers were waiting two or more hours to complete their transactions at the DMV.  The office remained open to ensure the DMV had sufficient capacity to serve customers who were unable to visit a DMV office during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
