Alton, NH – On Tuesday, March 26 at approximately 5:00 p.m., NH Fish and Game Conservation Officers were notified of an injured hiker on the blue trail on Mount Major. Alton Fire and Rescue responded along with New Hampshire Fish and Game and Lakes Region Search and Rescue (LRSAR). Alton Fire and Rescue responded on their 6×6 utility vehicle and located the injured hiker approximately ½ mile from the trailhead. The injured hiker was identified as 28-year-old, Carl F. Newman of Nashua, NH. Newman was transported to the trailhead parking area and evaluated by EMS personal.

At the trailhead, Newman was interviewed and stated that he began climbing the blue trail to the summit of Mt. Major and encountered ice and slippery conditions. He decided to turn around because he was not adequately equipped to continue his ascent in these conditions; Newman then slipped on a branch and suffered a lower leg injury. He called the local police for assistance.

New Hampshire Fish and Game would like to remind hikers to always be prepared and plan for the unexpected. Before your next hike, visit hikesafe.com.
