Advancement of Blacks in Sports (ABIS) to honor history making team at its third annual Champions & Legends Fundraising Weekend.

BALDWIN, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES, March 26, 2024 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Advancement of Blacks In Sports (ABIS), announced today that the Howard University Swim Team will be presented with the ABIS Collegiate Team of the Year Award at its third annual Champions & Legends Fundraising Weekend from May 31 – June 2 taking place at MGM National Harbor Hotel & Casino located along the National Harbor waterfront of Maryland.

"Receiving this award from ABIS is not just an accolade, but a testament to our collective dedication towards fostering access and equality in collegiate sports,” said Nicholas Askew, Howard University swimming and diving coach. “It's a recognition of our commitment to nurturing our student athletes and ensuring they have equitable opportunities to excel."

In 2023, the only all Black swim team in the country made history by taking home the Northeast Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving title, their first in 34 years in a sport where Black athletes have been conventionally underrepresented.

“The Howard University swim team’s historical achievements not only exemplify excellence in the pool, but also symbolize the resilience and dedication of this group of young athletes and their coaches,” said Gary Charles, CEO and founder of ABIS. “It's a privilege to celebrate their success and inspire future generations."

The Champions & Legends Fundraising weekend will also recognize and celebrate other outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of Blacks in the sports industry including: Ray Lewis, Yolanda ‘Lonnie’ Williams, Beverly Kearney, Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, Ben Crump, Paxton Baker, Warrick Scott, and the 1982 Cheyney University Women’s Basketball team

Funds raised throughout the weekend’s events will support ABIS's mission to increase the representation of Blacks in collegiate and professional sports. Proceeds will directly fund ABIS's programs and initiatives, including its financial coaching program, which ensures that Black student-athletes have the essential skills for financial well-being during and after their college careers.
