Western Hemisphere: Barbados' Independence Day

Press Statement
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
November 25, 2011

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Barbados as you celebrate your 45th anniversary of independence this November 30.

The United States and Barbados have shared a vibrant relationship since the United States recognized Barbados’ independence in 1966 and on the same day opened our Bridgetown Embassy. The partnership between our two countries is strengthened every day as we work together to encourage economic development, curb the effects of climate change, promote greater security and strengthen gender equality. Through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, the Partnership Framework for HIV and AIDS, and our common efforts to promote entrepreneurship and economic opportunity, we are building a brighter future for both our countries.

I wish all those in Barbados a safe and happy celebration on this special day. Congratulations and best wishes for a year of peace and prosperity.
