Memorial Service For Pioneering Former Oil Chaplain

ISSUED ON BEHALF OF THE UK OIL & GAS CHAPLAINCY

A memorial service is to be held for the late Reverend Andrew Wylie, founder of the UK Oil & Gas Chaplaincy.

Reverend Wylie, who passed away in June this year aged 84, first acted as chaplain to the offshore industry in 1985 and remained in that post until his retirement in 1991.

Reverend Wylie had previously been a Church of Scotland minister in Stepps, Lausanne, London and Edinburgh.

On taking up the post as chaplain, he was responsible for introducing a chaplaincy pilot scheme to determine how pastoral care could be provided in the offshore industry. During this period two major tragedies occurred – the 1986 helicopter crash off Sumburgh and Piper Alpha in 1988 – which led to the formal establishment of the UK Oil & Gas Chaplaincy in1989.

This set in train an organisation that has offered help and comfort to many people over the decades. Just Being There, a book he wrote about his experience in offshore ministry, was published in 2006.

Reverend Martin Grashoff, UK Oil & Gas Chaplain, said: “Reverend Andrew Wylie was an inspirational and forward-thinking person who is fondly remembered by everyone who knew him or came into contact with him.

“His work – and his legacy – has touched the lives of so many people connected to this industry and at this special memorial service, we will gather to remember him.”

The service will be held at 12.30pm on 25 November in the Oil Chapel, part of the Kirk of St Nicholas Uniting, Union Street, Aberdeen.

It will be led by: the Very Reverend Gerald Stranraer-Mull, Dean Emeritus of Aberdeen and Orkney; Reverend James Stewart, retired minister of Kirk of St Nicholas; the Right Reverend Robert Gillies, Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney; and Reverend Martin Grashoff.
