Podcast: How to Avoid a Runway Excursion

Sept. 25, 2023

Unstabilized approaches, get-there-itis, flight-plan continuation bias, and not fully understanding aircraft runway performance are reasons why runway excursions continue to be one of the most common safety challenges facing Part 91 operators. Training on how to effectively deal with such events and gleaning information from the FAA’s recently updated AC 91-79B, “Aircraft Landing Performance and Runway Excursion Mitigation,” can help reduce the threat. But Joe Samudovsky, co-chair of NBAA’s Small Flight Department Subcommittee, says that having a backup plan might be most important. “More options gives us more room to work with when the weather starts deteriorating at our destination, so we are not forced into continuing to land when the performance of the aircraft says otherwise.”

In this episode of NBAA’s “Flight Plan,” host Rob Finfrock speaks with:

  • David Keys, vice chair of NBAA’s Domestic Operations Committee and Chief Pilot for Peace River Citrus Products
  • Joe Samudovsky, co-chair of the NBAA Small Flight Department Subcommittee
