Remembering the Sumburgh Chinook Helicopter Crash

In the regular Sunday morning service, special attention will be given to the 25th anniversary of a North Sea helicopter crash which killed 45 people.

The service will include the remembrance of the 43 passengers and two crew who died on 6 November 1986, when a British International Helicopters' Boeing 234LR Chinook helicopter crashed while approaching Sumburgh Airport, Shetland.

The remembrance will be held during Sunday morning worship on 6 November at 11am in the Kirk of St Nicholas Uniting, Union Street, Aberdeen. The service will be lead by Rev Stephen Taylor, minister to the Kirk of St Nicholas Uniting, and Rev Martin Grashoff, UK Oil & Gas Chaplain.

Apart from the 1988 Piper Alpha disaster, the crash was the largest loss of life suffered by the UK oil and gas industry.

Mr Grashoff said: “The remembrance will mark the anniversary of this tragic incident in a quiet and dignified way.

“Families, friends and loved ones of those who lost their lives – as well as the wider oil and gas community – will come together to remember them and reflect.”

The UK Oil & Gas Industry Chaplaincy operates through the support of the Aberdeen Oil Industry Chaplaincy Trust which is fully funded by Oil and Gas UK. The Aberdeen Oil Industry Chaplaincy Trust is legally constituted and exists to administer the annual costs of supporting the Chaplaincy service.
