Artist Breaks Taboos And Sends A Message Of Inspiration To Women...
...By Celebrating Beauty In The Aging Naked Body In New 2012 Calendar
/EINPresswire.com/ October 31, 2011 -- Well-known portrait artist, Alice Matzkin has published a wall calendar containing the nude portraits of twelve courageous women, age 58-87. These respectful, sensitively rendered paintings represent the artist's decades long exploration into the aging process, and her own struggle with judgments and self-criticism of her aging body. They break through cultural taboos and traditional, youth based ideals of feminine beauty to show that beauty resides in the female form, no matter what age and condition.
Overcome with shame and negative judgments about her appearance as she grew older, Alice sought out elder women who were accepting of their bodies. In the process of lovingly caressing the lines, wrinkles and sagging skin of her subjects with brush and paint, Alice grew to be more accepting of her own lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.
"Painting these generous women has inspired me. I am much happier being in my body just as I am. I feel lucky just to have a body, and I don't intend to spend one more minute feeling badly about its shape and age," says Alice.
Each portrait in the calendar invites the viewer to look deeper than the surface appearance and to be inspired by the joy, dignity, composure and, yes, the beauty of these elders. Each month has a positive aphorism. Alice has also included an inspirational essay on how the project has affected her life.
Two of Alice's paintings are in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, her commissioned portrait of Chelsea Clinton hung in the Clinton White House, she has appeared on Oprah, the video about her work entitled WOMEN OF AGE: Portraits in Wisdom, Beauty and Strength was shown at the United Nations during the International Year of Older Persons. The entire collection of Naked Truth paintings appeared in Ms Magazine.
The paintings in NAKED TRUTH are part of Alice's award winning art/inspirational book, THE ART OF AGING: Celebrating the Authentic Aging Self, co-authored with her sculptor husband, Richard. The Matzkins have been working for almost two decades on the various art projects related to aging.
The book is available in bookstores, on Amazon or at Sentient Publications --
