Sanctioning Illicit Darknet Marketplace
Today, the United States designated Genesis Market, a hacking group that is also one of the world’s largest illicit marketplaces for stolen device credentials and related sensitive information. Genesis Market is believed to operate out of Russia and sells stolen credentials from leading U.S. companies and facilitates cybercrimes against them.
The United States will continue our efforts to protect U.S. businesses from malicious cyber actors, disrupt these actors’ activities, and impose consequences on the cybercriminals who use their services. We also encourage all U.S. businesses to remain vigilant and enhance security and resilience efforts in the face of growing cybercriminal threats.
Today’s action is being taken pursuant to Executive Order 13694 , as amended. It was done so in coordination with the Department of Treasury and Department of Justice. For more information about this designation, please see the Department of the Treasury’s press release .
