Mark Athanasios Karras was born in Miami, Florida in 1927 and raised in Greece. On his return home and after serving in the US military, he earned a BBA degree from Columbia and Miami University and later an MA in Economics. He was also consecrated in the Eastern Orthodox Episcopate and earned a Ph.D. from Trinity Seminary.
