U.S. Embassy Supports Inclusive Economic Growth and Sustainable Tourism in Tafilah

Amman, November 2, 2022 – U.S. Ambassador Henry T. Wooster met on Wednesday with government officials, educators, and conservation experts in Tafilah governorate.  Joined by members of the U.S. Embassy economic, political, public affairs and international development teams, Ambassador Wooster underscored U.S. government support for inclusive economic growth across Jordan.

“Jordan and the United States share a deep connection.  The U.S. government is committed to promoting development and education opportunities across Jordan.  My meetings today with young people, local officials, and educators in Tafilah highlighted the work Jordan has done to create opportunities for all,” said Ambassador Wooster.  He further noted, “I have long been impressed by the Dana Biosphere Reserve and Jordan’s many natural splendors, and I enjoyed hearing more about sustainable ecotourism opportunities today.”

Ambassador Wooster met with Governor Muhammad Abu-Jamous to discuss areas of mutual interest, including potential for economic growth in Tafilah and the challenges of development in the Dana Biosphere Reserve.

In additional meetings, Ambassador Wooster visited the Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan’s largest nature reserve, to discuss U.S. support for biodiversity and ecotourism with the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature.  He also visited the Khadija Bint Khwailed Secondary Mixed School in Tafilah, one of the 25 new schools built under the USAID-funded Schools for a Knowledge Economy Project.  During this visit he discussed access to inclusive and environmentally friendly learning environments with education leaders from Tafilah.

Ambassador Wooster’s visit to Tafilah follows prior visits in the Jordan Valley, Madaba, Irbid, Zarqa, Al Karak, Ma’an, and Aqaba to hear a broad range of perspectives from across Jordan on key issues of the U.S.-Jordan partnership, including U.S. support for water and economic development, community-based initiatives, women’s economic security, and youth empowerment.
