Overview 2011 Review: Part 3 - What makes PotashCorp Unique and Valuable?

Launched in September, the 2011 Overview of PotashCorp and Its Industry offers a snapshot of the factors that drive our strategy and influence our performance. Illustrated with more than 100 full-color graphs available both online and in print, the Overview reveals how we manage our business — and why.

Here’s a snapshot of what you will find:

PotashCorp has built the world’s largest fertilizer enterprise by capacity on world-class potash resources and strategic investments in offshore potash related companies, as well as high-quality phosphate and nitrogen assets.

While potash is the focal point of our business, we have competitive strengths and strategies in all three of our business segments that attempt to maximize the long-term value of our assets.

Potash

We not only focus on potash because of its key advantages compared to other nutrients, we believe we are uniquely positioned to capitalize on the anticipated growth in potash demand.

We are the world’s largest producer, with 20 percent1 of global capacity and unmatched growth potential from our ongoing brownfield expansion program. By 2015, we expect to have 23 percent of global capacity at our Canadian operations.

With extensive reserves and infrastructure in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, we can add brownfield capacity at a fraction of the time and cost of greenfield projects.

We also benefit from our investments in other global potash producers, which add financial value to our company and give us important exposure to key offshore markets.

Phosphate

We are the third largest producer by phosphoric acid capacity, with world-class assets in Aurora, NC and White Springs, FL.

Our competitive advantage begins with access to lower-cost, high-quality rock in Aurora, where we have a permit to mine for more than 30 years. This enables us to produce the most diversified product line in the industry and get the optimum benefit from our phosphoric acid.

Nitrogen

We are the third largest global nitrogen producer by ammonia capacity with facilities in the US and Trinidad that are well positioned to serve the large US market, the world’s largest nitrogen importing region.

Trinidad provides approximately two-thirds of PotashCorp’s ammonia and has longer-term gas contracts primarily indexed to ammonia prices, providing added stability in an often volatile commodity. Our US plants are located in regions geographically insulated from the highly competitive US Gulf, which we believe allows us to better serve local agricultural markets and industrial buyers for which quality and security of supply are key.
