Authorities Apprehend Incarcerated Person Who Walked Away from Los Angeles County Fire Camp

ACTON — Matthew Wells, an offender who walked away from Acton Conservation Camp in Los Angeles County on Sept. 5, has been apprehended.

The 36-year-old Wells was taken into custody on Sept. 6, 2022, without incident by California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s (CDCR) fire camp staff. Wells was found about 9:30 a.m. in the city of Acton.

Wells was transported to Sierra Conservation Center. He will be ineligible to participate in the fire camp program and his case will be referred to the district attorney for consideration of escape charges.

Wells was discovered missing on Sept. 5 during an afternoon head count. He was received from Humboldt County on Nov. 9, 2021, and was sentenced to four years for first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm by a felon or an addict.

Since 1977, 99 percent of all offenders who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission have been apprehended.
