Hoyer Statement on House Passage of the Active Shooter Alert Act of 2022

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House passed H.R. 6538, the Active Shooter Alert Act:

“I was proud to bring this bipartisan legislation to the Floor today and support its passage.  The Active Shooter Alert Act will help make our communities safer, providing tools to law enforcement to disseminate information quickly to the public if an active shooter is terrorizing a community.  In those critical minutes and hours, it is essential that public-safety officials are able to communicate to those who may be at risk how they can remain safe and informed during a dangerous emergency.

“I want to thank my friends Reps. Cicilline and Upton for partnering on this legislation and making it truly bipartisan.  This will build on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that Congress enacted last month, another example of how we can make progress on the issue of gun-violence when Democrats and Republicans work together.  Now, it is up to the Senate to find a path forward on the two major pieces of gun-safety legislation that the House passed last year and that have overwhelming support from the American people: the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and the Enhanced Background Checks Act.  I urge the Senate to take action on both without further delay.”
