Press Statement
Victoria Nuland
Department Spokesperson, Office of the Spokesperson
Washington, DC
September 20, 2011

The United States is deeply troubled by what appears to be a well-orchestrated attack which took place in a popular night spot in the town of Gatumba, 16 kilometers west of the capital, Bujumbura, on September 18th.

We condemn this act of violence and offer our condolences to the families of the deceased and to the wounded. We urge the Government of Burundi to make every effort to bring those responsible for this horrific act to justice and call upon all parties to put an end to violence and return to the process of reconciliation.
