/EINPresswire.com/ Los Angeles, California------August 3, 2011----- The LA Conservation Corps has been designated to lead supervised canoe and kayak trips down a designated stretch of the Los Angeles River. This pilot program will launch on August 8, 2011. The Los Angeles Conservation Corps (LACC) has expectations that this pilot program will turn into a full-time boating experience. The program will operate every Saturday and Sunday from August 13, 2011 through September 25, 2011 (weather permitting). The fee per participant is $50 plus a $3.74 handling fee. This covers the rental of the boats, safety equipment, labor, administration, equipment transport, and insurance. People can register at www.paddlethelariver.org.
Col. Mark Toy, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District, issued the license for the non-motorized boating pilot program to the LACC on July 22.
"This opportunity allows the Corps and its LA River partners to share valuable information to shape the future of the river," said Toy. "Providing safe and healthy recreation experiences to meet the needs of current and future generations is part of the Corps' Recreation Strategic Plan, however nothing we do can jeopardize human safety or reduce the flood carrying capacity of the river."
"The tireless effort of many eco-minded organizations, city officials and individuals has made this pilot program possible," states Bruce Saito, the Director of the Los Angeles Conservation Corps. "Access and awareness to the precious LA River with its rich history will provide enjoyment and the opportunity to educate members of our community to water safety, environmental stewardship, water conservation and more."
" 'Paddle the LA River' is not just the culmination of efforts between many City officials, the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, the US Army Corps of Engineers and many volunteer organizations, but a new beginning in the revitalization of the Los Angeles River," said Los Angeles City Councilmember Tony Cárdenas. "This recreation program offers an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of our ability to clean-up and improve the Los Angeles River as well as environmentally-compromised areas throughout our City."
"With President Obama's launch of the Great Outdoors Initiative last year, the City of Los Angeles, in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps, is taking our river back by transforming it from our backyard to our front yard," said Los Angeles City Councilmember Ed P. Reyes, who spearheaded the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan. "Launch of the non-motorized boating program moves us closer to our goals of environmental conservation and education. When nature thrives, we thrive," stated Councilmember Ed Reyes.
"This first paddle of the kayaks is the realization of years of working together to harness the tremendous resource value of the Los Angeles River and create a continuous greenway from the mountains to the sea. One day, soon, families will be able to dispatch from Sepulveda Basin to one of our many river parks, enjoy a picnic under the shade of sycamore and oaks, and revel in the natural beauty that drew the original settlers to Los Angeles," stated Joseph T. Edmiston, Executive Officer, Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.
Other Environmental organizations involved in the "Paddle the LA River," program include: Mountains, Recreation,Conservation Authority, The River Project, Urban Semillas, LA River Expeditions and Friends of The Los Angeles River.
