The Largest Implosion Ever In The State Of Maine

Engineered Products Of Portland, ME To Implode 64 Year-Old Heat Plant At Loring Air Force Base.

/EINPresswire.com/ Limestone, ME - July 28, 2011 -- Built in 1947 and shut down in 1994, The Central Heat Plant at Loring Air Force Base (AFB) in Limestone, ME is scheduled to be imploded on Saturday, August 13. The demolition of the Central Heat Plant, which will be handled by Engineered Products Company, Inc. based in Portland, ME, is the first step in clearing the site for industrial expansion and growth at Loring.

The biggest SAC base in the country, Loring AFB is located in the northeastern comer of Maine, in Aroostook County, approximately 5 miles west and south of the Canadian border, and 400 miles north of Boston. The property totals 8,700 acres, and at the height of the Cold War, the Heat Plant provided heat and hot water to more than 10,000 officers, airmen, dependents and civilians.

"This is the company's biggest demolition project, and I believe the biggest implosion ever in the state of Maine", proudly stated by Steve Milley - founder, president and owner of EP. "We've been involved with several similar projects in Maine and along the east coast but nothing of this magnitude. The entire company is very excited and looking forward to the event."

The built-up environment of Loring AFB demonstrated the military, technological, and economic complexity of the Cold War. With the largest capacity of fully capable conventional weapons storage and fuel storage of all SAC bases, Loring was one of the most heavily armed and stands as a visible representation of the policies that shaped the political, economic, and military history of the world in the last half of the 20th Century.

Specific buildings and areas in what is now known as the Loring Commerce Centre still display exceptional significance on a national, state, and local level, including the airfield, the Arch Hangar, the Double Cantilever Hangar, the Weapons Storage Area, and the Alert Area.
